    Obituary

    Mike, of Port Elgin passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 in his 102nd year. Loving husband of the late Olga. Beloved father of Mike and his wife Louise, Janice and her husband Doug Woito, and Steve and his wife Joanne. He will be fondly remembered by all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

    Spending his life in service to his country and community, Mike was the oldest surviving member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the “Senior Man” with the lowest Regimental Number 13134. He joined the Force in December 1938 and served in “K” and “B” Divisions and back to “K” where he retired in January 1966. He was a Life Member of the RCMP Edmonton Vets. Mike was the Chief Security Supervisor with Ontario Hydro Construction BNPD (1966-1982); Municipal Councillor in Port Elgin (1982-1987); Past President, Service Officer and recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal (1994) Royal Canadian Legion -Port Elgin Br. 340; and a devoted parishioner of St. Joseph’s Parish in Port Elgin.

    Friends will be received on Thursday, October 24, 2019 from 6:30pm – 9:00 pm at the T.A. Brown Funeral Home, 510 Mill Street, Port Elgin, 519-832-2222. Parish Prayers and a Royal Canadian Legion service will be held in the chapel beginning at 6:15pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 25, 2019 at 11:00am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 920 Wellington Street, Port Elgin. Private family internment, St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Southampton.

    Memorial donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 340, the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation, the RCMP Heritage Centre or your choice of charitable donations would be appreciated by the family.

    Peacefully at Gateway Haven in Wiarton, Ontario on Sunday, March 8, 2009 in his 84th year. Son of the late Alfredo (Fred) and Lucy (Minicola) Pepe of Peterborough. Survived by brother Michele Pepe of Port Elgin, Mary (Pepe) Primeau of Belleville. Predeceased by sister, Matilda (Pepe) Harris (Al); sister-in-law Olga; brother-in-law Jake. Proud, and loving Uncle to his nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. He will be fondly remembered by all. Alfred would spend weekends in Peterborough working with his parents in the family store at 519 (Elm) Hopkins Street. After WWII, he was employed for 39½ years at A.V. Roe (Orenda Division, Malton) until 1990. Alfred was a proud Union activist with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Alf was also active with DL717, DL78, past president of LL717T & Retirees Club. Alfred was an avid fisherman throughout his life. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Peterborough Branch 52.

Memberships: She was a member of UNITE and was a 1946 graduate of Bangor High School. Survivors: She is survived by a daughter, Michelene A "Mickey" Unger and her husband Terry of Bethlehem; son , Peter J.     SABATINO, Joseph Michael passed away peacefully with strength and courage at Hospice Peterborough on July 19, 2019 in his 89th year. Joseph was born in Lakefield, Ontario on June 7, 1930, the son of John Sabatino and Margaret Bissonnette. Beloved and cherished husband of Marianne Sabatino (nee Leonard) of 60 years d. March 31, 2019. Loving and proud father of John Sabatino (Fay), Michael Sabatino (Sandra) and Carla Sabatino (Vincent Zaffino). Dear Grandpa to Christina, Cara, Tyler and Jessica. Joe will be dearly missed by his brother Eugene and his wife Ruth of Toronto and their children Timothy and Jason and families. He will be fondly remembered by Sisters-in-Law Betty Lou Fair (late Robert) and Linda Pearson (late Robert), Brother-in-Law, Kevin Heffernan (late Barbara), and many nieces and nephews.

    Retired Principal of Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board. As a long-range thinker, concerned with what students learned for the 1980s, 90s and the 21st century, Joe Sabatino was attune to the “information explosion”. He knew that students must be taught how and where to find relevant information. At the end of his 35 year career in education Joe was quoted as saying, “We are in the midst of a major change in education”.

    Upon retiring from education Joe continued to operate several businesses. Born of an innovative father whose spirit fueled Joe, it is not surprising that most of Joe’s life was focused in entrepreneurship. His success was a result of his vision, daring, hard work and good business sense. Joe’s balanced values toward business, faith and community propelled him to positively impact life as he knew it.

    Joe had a kind, generous, optimistic and philanthropic nature. He was a happy person who loved life and would do it all again. His strength, determination, strong work ethic, guidance, words of wisdom and storytelling are fondly remembered and cherished. He will be forever missed.

    Joe adored his family and treasured his relatives and friends, always seeing the good in everyone. He loved and enjoyed music, especially jazz, blues and swing. A special verse from Louie Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World” is his heartfelt wish for all:

    I see friends shaking hands
    Saying, "How do you do?"
    They're really saying
    "I love you".

    Joseph’s family would like to thank the many doctors (Dr. Beamish, Dr. Heidman, Dr. Matheson, Dr. Morelli and Dr. Whiting) and dedicated medical staff, nurses and paramedics at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, Emergency Unit and Hospice Peterborough for their tremendous care and compassion during his time with them.

    Eugene Francis Sabatino passed away peacefully at home on February 19, 2022, in his 88 years. Eugene was born in Lakefield, Ontario on March 22, 1933, the son of John Sabatino and Margaret Bissonnette. Beloved and cherished husband of Ruth Sabatino of over 62 years. Loving and proud father of Tim Sabatino (wife Margaret), Jason Sabatino (wife Mona). Dear Grandpa to Madison, Haley, Riley, and Kaylia. Eugene will be dearly missed by his nephews John (wife Fay), Michael (wife Sandra) and Niece Carla (Vincent) and families.
    He Retired from Liberty Mutual as one of the top Sales Representatives of 32 years. He had a great passion for his job and, was greatly known within the company. With many awards under his belt.
    Upon his retirement he began to spend more time at the cottage of over 40 years. Winters away in Florida and summers on the lake. These were his favorite places to be. He spent more time driving his classic Corvette and going for long boat rides.
    Eugene always loved to tell stories to his kids about his father. Working in the Nephton quarry and mines. The way he told the stories made it sound like his father was a jack of all trades - converting some barges and tugboats. One of his favorite stories from his father was when he took his 'Model A' car and decided to put skis on the front to make it better in snow.
    Eugene adored his family and treasured his relatives and friends. He always saw the good in people. He loved and enjoyed music popularly known as the Big Bag Era. Jazz, blues and swing. He also loved a good book. The Sabatino family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses that helped care for him.
    Visitation will be held on Monday, February 28 from 5-8 p.m. Service will be Tuesday, March 1, at St. Gregory’s Church. Due to current covid procedures in place please use the “registration” link below to sign-up for both the visitation and service.

    It is with deep sadness, we share that (Rose) Marie Cullen nee Williams peacefully left this world on Tuesday February 7, 2023 in her 97th year. Marie timed her goodbye so beautifully on "The Day of the Rose" and on her late husband, Thomas Cullen's 99th birthday. Marie is predeceased by her three siblings and her parents Rose and Thomas Williams. She leaves behind her son Thomas Cullen (Mary) and daughter Cathy Webb. Her grandchildren Jay Cullen (Tracy), Jenny Cullen (Trevor Hickey), Janet Mundell (Dan), Jon Cullen (Amanda), Andrew Webb (Charlie) and 13 great-grandchildren. Marie started working at a young age and worked with her grandmother and mom in the family store, "Minicola's" on Erskine Avenue in Peterborough's south end. Marie lived a life full of love and adventure, enjoyed traveling, singing and was part of the Sweet Adeline's group for years. She lived a life of service by volunteering at many places including the Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club, St. Joseph's at Fleming, the Bingo Hall, Showplace and with the Millbrook Hockey Club. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays and Miami Dolphins have lost one of their biggest fans. Marie impacted many during her life and lived a life full of love. She did not judge and never spoke an ill word of anyone. Her smile was contagious and she leaves behind a legacy of a giving, amazing human.
    Friends and family will be received at Nisbett Funeral Home, 600 Monaghan Rd S. in Peterborough on Monday, February 13, 2023. Visitation starts at 11 am followed by a Celebration of Life and interment at St. Peters Cemetery for those who wish to join. Donations can be made to a Charity of Your Choice and in memory of Marie, Mom, Granny, Great Gran, do something kind for someone today.

    Of Washington, D.C., died July 7, 2014, at Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center in Arlington, Va. Born in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Leonard and Amelia (Ronca) Casciano. Dan graduated from Muhlenberg College with a degree in Physics and went on to work for the U.S. Government in the Department. of Defense where he was awarded a Sustained Superior Performance Award and a Meritorious Civilian Service Award. He also held a Professional Engineering License, and later worked as Chief Engineer for the Omni Shoreham Hotel. He was an avid fisherman, and also enjoyed camping and swimming. Surviving: He will be lovingly remembered by his sister Mary Rose Mavis; nieces Rose Marie Mavis, Susan Mavis Schwoyer; nephew John Mavis.     Mary Rose Mavis, born in Fountain Hill, passed away peacefully in the care of Scenic View Personal Care Home, Palmerton, PA. She was 93 years old. She previously resided in Bethlehem, PA. Mary Rose was the daughter of the late Amelia (Ronca) and Leonard Casciano and was predeceased by her husband, John Jordan Mavis, her son, John Joseph Mavis, her daughter-in-law, Faye Baxevane Mavis and her brother, Donato Casciano.

    Mary Rose is survived by her loving daughters, Rose Marie Mavis and Susan Schwoyer (Scott), her daughter-in-law, Nell Ryan, and her grandchildren, Nicole Mavis (Mike Linde), Derek Schwoyer, Erika Schwoyer, Jennifer Schwoyer and Samantha Schwoyer.

    She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and took pride as a homemaker in caring for her family and hosting gatherings, at which she would regale everyone with her accomplished piano playing. Mary Rose was an avid cook and baker, winning local contests and prizes. Her love of gardening was a source of joy and she came to be known locally as the Tomato Lady. In her spare time, she enjoyed crafting and would look forward to entering local craft shows, which included her signature Christmas tree napkins. She enjoyed the warmth of the sun and that's where you could always find her in the summer months. But mostly she enjoyed sharing her heart and home with others.
