162 Eugene Sabatino 22 March 1933 - 19 February 2022
Posted on February 23, 2022 by luc

In memory of
Eugene Sabatino
22 March 1933 –
19 February 2022
Eugene Francis Sabatino passed away peacefully at home on February 19, 2022, in his 88 years. Eugene was born in Lakefield, Ontario on March 22, 1933, the son of John Sabatino and Margaret Bissonnette. Beloved and cherished husband of Ruth Sabatino of over 62 years. Loving and proud father of Tim Sabatino (wife Margaret), Jason Sabatino (wife Mona). Dear Grandpa to Madison, Haley, Riley, and Kaylia. Eugene will be dearly missed by his nephews John (wife Fay), Michael (wife Sandra) and Niece Carla (Vincent) and families.
He Retired from Liberty Mutual as one of the top Sales Representatives of 32 years. He had a great passion for his job and, was greatly known within the company. With many awards under his belt.
Upon his retirement he began to spend more time at the cottage of over 40 years. Winters away in Florida and summers on the lake. These were his favorite places to be. He spent more time driving his classic Corvette and going for long boat rides.
Eugene always loved to tell stories to his kids about his father. Working in the Nephton quarry and mines. The way he told the stories made it sound like his father was a jack of all trades - converting some barges and tugboats. One of his favorite stories from his father was when he took his 'Model A' car and decided to put skis on the front to make it better in snow.
Eugene adored his family and treasured his relatives and friends. He always saw the good in people. He loved and enjoyed music popularly known as the Big Bag Era. Jazz, blues and swing. He also loved a good book. The Sabatino family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses that helped care for him.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 28 from 5-8 p.m. Service will be Tuesday, March 1, at St. Gregory’s Church. Due to current covid procedures in place please use the “registration” link below to sign-up for both the visitation and service.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Eugene Sabatino 22 March 1933
19 February 2022..

181 Hughes family history and emigration.

Patrick Hughes and his two sisters, Ellen & Susannah came to Canada from Armagh Co., Ireland in the 1840's. They arrived at Perth, Lanark Co, where they did farm and domestic work. Patrick and Ellen married Anne and James Legary another sister and brother combination of French Canadian descent. The Irish and French marriages were common as they held the same Roman Catholic religion. Although the majority of Irish are Catholics, however, most Hughes are Protestants. So the RC faith of this Hughes branch adds a particular characteristic to their history. Apparently the change of faith took place in Ireland.

Patrick and his wife Anne (Legary) first rented a farm Lot 21, Con 12, Bathurst Twp near Playfairville, just a couple miles up the MIssissippi River from her parent's home near Balderson. A few years later they settled their own farm Lot 18, Con 1, North Sherbrooke Twp above the High Falls at Dalhousie Lake about 8 miles further up the Mississippi River. Patrick Hughes' sister Ellen and her husband James Legary also purchased a farm nearby. Susannah never married. They all spent the rest of their lives in the community of Dalhousie Lake which had a post office until the late 1940's.

They are all buried in the Catholic cemetery beside St. Columbkill Church, McDonald's Corners. The first grave in this cemetery was the interment of Patrick Hughes. Gravestones were erected in their memory to mark the plots in the churchyard.

183 Joseph Legary military service: War of 1812:

Between 1808 and 1813, Quartermaster Sergeant (QMSgt) Joseph Legare had risen through the ranks and was a staff member of the regiment. A few months later, the regiment was dispatched south of Montreal, and would help to defend the territory against an American invasion in October 1813 at the Battle of Chateauguay.

The colonial regiment was renamed the Canadian Fencibles, and posted to serve garrison duty between 1814 and 1815 to defend Fort Henry at Kingston, which was a strategic location at the entrance of the St. Lawrence River, and the gateway to Lake Ontario.
